Tanning Frequently Asked Questions

The tanning process is really quite simple, and works the same whether you tan indoors or outdoors. Tanning takes place in the skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis. About 5% of the cells in your epidermis are special cells called melanocytes. When exposed to ultraviolet B light (short wave ultraviolet), melanocytes produce melanin—the pigment which is ultimately responsible for your tan. The pinkish melanin travels up through the epidermis and is absorbed by other skin cells. When exposed to ultraviolet A light (longer wave), the melanin oxidizes or darkens. This darkening is your skin’s way of protecting itself against too much UV light.
Although getting a tan is certainly the main benefit of tanning, there are other benefits of using a tanning bed. For one, you are able to control your exposure to UV light. We promote moderate tanning to build your tan gradually. Another benefit is that scientific research has shown that exposure to UV rays actually helps the body create a natural supply of Vitamin D. Since there are so many diseases that are linked directly to Vitamin D deficiencies, such as both osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, using a tanning bed to increase these vitamin levels is a huge benefit to strengthening your bone. Moderate, indoor tanning is helpful in reducing the side the effects of psoriasis. Speed: It doesn’t take all day to get a tan indoors. Depending on your skin type, it may just take a few minutes, not hours. Control: Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us to monitor and scientifically control your ultraviolet UV-A and UV-B exposure. We make sure you tan and not burn. Climate: Overcast, rainy, or 109 degrees in the shade, you never have to worry about the weather with your pleasant, climate-controlled environment.
Lips don’t produce melanin and eyelids are too thin to block UV. That’s why it’s important to wear lip balm with sunscreen. It’s also important to wear protective eye goggles. Eyewear must be certified and approved by the FDA. We offer a selection of goggles that meet these Federal standards. You can avoid “raccoon eyes” by gently adjusting your goggles while you tan, but never remove them completely. When you tan outdoors, you are exposed to uncontrolled and often excessive amounts of multi-frequency UV that can cause sunburn and permanent damage.
Some medications can cause reactions with UV light. If you are taking any medications, please let your doctor know you are tanning. For more information, visit or
Moist skin tans best. We highly recommend using an accelerator lotion, it helps you to tan faster by generating melanin growth to get a deeper tan, and to keep it longer in between tans. Sorry, no baby oil or outdoor sunscreens (SPF) are allowed to be used in the beds. These products cause damage to the acrylics.

Vitamin D

Though vitamin D can be absorbed into the body through foods and supplements, the most effective way to get it is through the skin in the form of sunlight. Researchers have found that to get the optimal amount of vitamin D, it is practically impossible through only enriched foods and supplements. This healthy amount of sunlight can be achieved through controlled exposure to the sun and through indoor tanning. Click here for more Vitamin D info.

Clinically known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), can trigger feelings of depression, lethargy, fatigue and other health problems. Indoor tanning has proven to help counter react the effects of lack of sunshine in the long winter months, as we have all experienced living in the Pacific Northwest.

I have had amazing results using my Vela Shape body contouring package. My body felt tighter after one session; I was hooked. There is not a correct answer to this question. Everyone has their personal preferences as to what they expect a lotion to do and the results they expect receive. There are other variables to take into account also, such as: Skin type, tanning experience, oily skin, dry skin, the type of tanning lamps and tanning bed used etc. There are simply too many factors involved to determine what is the “BEST” lotion.  Please speak with a staff member who will best be able to advice you according to your needs and expectations.
A “tingle” is a stimulation of the epidermal layers of your skin. Most people feel their skin heat up or tingle after applying these lotions. The skin stimulation (irritation) brings blood closer to the surface of the skin. The blood brings melanin with it and you may receive a better tan. The tingle factors range from 1 to 10. Higher the number, the more intense the tingling. It is recommended you start with a tingle of 1 or 2 to become accustomed to the stimulation then gradually work up through the different levels.
These little patches won’t tan, what are they? Most likely It’s a harmless fungus that lives on the skins surface. The fungus does not absorb UV rays. The rest of your body will tan but  not where those patches of fungus were. There are prescription medications available.
Your skin actually becomes thicker as your tanning progresses and makes It difficult for UV light to penetrate the upper layers of skin. This is commonly referred to as a tanning “Plateau”. Moisturizer is extremely important at this point. Your skin cells are standing up as much as 45°and are actually reflecting the UV rays. Using a lot of moisturizing lotion will help these cells lay down and become more translucent, therefore more receptive to UV rays. What can I do to tan my face & legs better? Use a moisturizer at least twice daily. It’s a fact that moist skin tans much better than dry skin Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
The tanning process actually continues for a period of time after a tanning session. Taking a shower will remove the mantel acid from your skin and slow down or stop this continued tanning process. It is recommended you not shower for 2 hours after your tanning session or 1 hour before.
Please do not! Indoor lotions usually DO NOT contain SPF, which will leave you with no sun protection from the sun’s UV rays. Outdoor UV rays can vary daily even hourly in intensity. It is not recommended you use a SPF while tanning outdoors.
Outdoor tanning lotions are not recommended for indoor use, as they can cause a film on the acrylic and will inhibit the tanning process.
Use moisturizers that were specifically designed and developed for indoor tanning. Use it frequently while tanning. Properly moisturized skin tans much easier.
You should have a skin tone change after the first few tanning sessions. You should have a good base tan in 8-10 tanning sessions then one to three tanning sessions a week should maintain your tan in an entry level bed.
Are there some precautions I need to be aware of? Yes! Don’t try to rush your tan. A tan should be obtained gradually. Gradually increase your exposure times, 1 to 2 minutes at a time. Consult your physician if you are taking any medication. Some medication can cause extra sensitivity to the UV light, causing overexposure. Also consult your physician If you have any type of skin irritation or other condition. Always wear protective eyewear!! Ultraviolet light will penetrate the eyelids.
Some skin types tan quickly and easily while others just don’t have the pigmentation necessary to develop much of a tan. If you have “type 1” skin It’s recommended that you not tan at all. Type 1 skin is skin that always burns easily and severely, tans little and peels. This condition is most common with people that have fair skin, blue eyes and freckles. Approximately 5% of the population is unable to tan. We would recommend you try one of our UV free tanning options.
Your tan occurs on the outer layers of your skin, the epidermal layers. Those skin cells gradually die and are replaced with the next layer (un-tanned) every 26 to 30 days. When tanning, I get extremely itchy skin… Is there something to prevent this? Most likely your either photosensitive to UV light or allergic to a chemical in your tanning lotion. Try this, take a shower and wash all existing chemicals off your skin then go to your tanning session and tan without lotion. If you don’t have a good base tan cut your tanning session down a few minutes. You will know after your session as to whether you have a UV problem or a lotion problem.
How can sunburn be good if It hurts so bad? NOT true! Many people FALSELY assume that sunburns will eventually “fade” into tans. Sunburn is associated with permanent skin damage!!!! Sunburn is an injury on top of your tanned skin. That’s why it hurts so bad! Never! Never! Never! burn yourself intentionally.
Bronzers are a dye that changes the color of your skin instantly. Some people love them and others hate them. You have to be careful when applying bronzers as some will streak if not applied evenly, also real dry areas will absorb more of the bronzer and leave the skin a different color. Elbows, knees, between the fingers, and palms of hands are the most common spots. Many people that use bronzers will take wet wipes with them to clean these areas and hands immediately after applying bronzers.
Pressure points are usually found on the shoulder blades, tailbone and elbow area. What you want to do is lift up, carefully off the acrylic, several times during your tanning session, to allow oxygen to get at that skin. Within a few tanning sessions, you should see them disappear. Or, many clients choose to ad upright tanning to cover all areas.
Always wear eye protection! The eye lid is thin and is extremely susceptible to UV light. While tanning, eyes should be completely covered with professional eyewear designed for tanners. Pick which kind works for you and use it! Every time!
Yes, your lips do not produce melanin and will never develop a tan. However, UV light from the sun or sun bed will cause your lips to dry. When tanning, always keep your lips moist with a SPF lip balm.
