New survey finds that parents in the United Kingdom are unaware of the proper steps to ensure that their child has healthy vitamin D levels.

New data gathered by the Vitamin D Mission found that parents in the United Kingdom are unaware of the proper steps to ensure that their child is vitamin D sufficient during the winter months.

Vitamin D Mission is an ongoing awareness campaign working to alleviate vitamin D deficiency in children under 5 years old in the United Kingdom.

This survey comes at an important time in conjunction with Vitamin D Day, which takes place on November 2nd. It is a time to recognize vitamin D deficiency as a worldwide problem and take action to raise awareness.

Many people fail to realize that vitamin D deficiency may result in very few symptoms, and possibly none at all. Yet, recent research continues to suggest that vitamin D deficiency impacts many areas of health, ranging from the immune system to the brain.

Data was recently gathered to evaluate the awareness and knowledge of vitamin D among parents and medical professionals in the UK.

The survey found that 82% of the parents were unaware of the Department of Health guidelines to supplement all young children, ages six months to five years, with a daily vitamin D supplement. Only 4% of parents were able to identify the months in which vitamin D production is available from the sun.

Half of the parents admitted to knowing “not much,” or “nothing” about the importance of vitamin D for their child’s health. Over one third of the parents reported that they had never received any information about the role of vitamin D in health.

In addition, only 7% of general practitioners responsible for providing health information to new mothers knew which months are capable of receiving vitamin D from the sun

“These findings are very worrying as they seem to suggest that parents in the UK are still not properly informed of the major health issues associated with low levels of vitamin D,” commented Dr. Benjamin Jacobs, clinical consultant to the Vitamin D Mission.
